SILVER CITY, N.M. – It was a strong end to the regular season for the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team as they claimed the 8-1 win over Colorado Christian in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday.
WNMU (7-15, 3-1 RMAC) came out strong taking a 3-0 lead through doubles. Senior
Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad)/junior
Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) cruised to the 8-2 win at No. 2. Senior
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/redshirt sophomore
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) dropped just one more point at No. 3 in taking the 8-3 victory. Senior
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/junior
Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) fought off a tough challenge at the top flight and took the 8-4 win.
In singles, Heinze at No. 5 and Morrill at No. 6 dropped just two games each with Heinze taking the 6-2, 6-0 win and Morrill with the 6-1, 6-1 win. Goodland was close to putting up that same score at No. 4 coming away with the 6-3, 6-1 win. Osuna also won her match in straight sets at No. 2 posting the 6-4, 6-3 win.
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) had to go three sets at No. 3, but grabbed the 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) won five games in her match at the top flight before falling short, 2-6, 3-6.
It was senior day for

Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) and
Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), as all four played their entire collegiate careers for the Lady Mustangs.
WNMU will now prepare for the RMAC Tournament that will take place Apr. 22-23 in Pueblo, Colo. The Lady Mustangs will likely be the two seed in the tournament, depending on how Colorado Mesa does over their final three RMAC matches holding the tiebreaker for the top spot.
