Ashley Newell, Osuna Record All-RMAC Academic First-Team, Morrill Named to Honor Roll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Seniors Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) and Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) earned All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Academic First-Team honors, while senior Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) was named to the honor roll as the teams were announced Tuesday.

Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) holds a 3.80 GPA and is majoring in chemistry. This is the fourth time she has made the list and second time on the First-Team, collecting the honor as a sophomore. Newell moved up to the top spot in singles this season and went 4-19. In doubles she added a 10-13 record with junior teammate Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy), with all of their matches taking place at the top flight. They are ranked eighth in the South Central Region. She added singles wins against CSU-Pueblo and closed her career with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win over Colorado Mesa. In doubles some of the top wins were against Arizona Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Northwest Missouri State, East Central, Tarleton State and two wins in conference.

Osuna holds a 3.95 GPA and is majoring in marketing. This is the third straight season in which she has landed on the Academic First-Team list. She went 8-14 in singles action this season, 6-11 at No. 2, 1-3 at No. 3 and 1-0 at No. 4. In doubles she added a 7-14 mark, going 7-13 with redshirt sophomore teammate Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ). They went 1-12 at No. 2 and 6-1 at No. 3. She ended the season with three straight singles victories against Colorado Christian, MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa. Some other top wins include Texas A&M-Kingsville and Grand Canyon. Some top doubles wins were against Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tarleton State and going 5-1 in RMAC matches.

Morrill holds a 3.56 GPA and is majoring in secondary education. This marks the third straight year she has tallied honor roll honors. She posted an 8-15 singles record going 0-2 at No. 5 and 8-13 at No. 6. In doubles she went 10-13, tallying a 9-12 mark with junior teammate Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) as they went 3-5 at No. 2 and 6-7 at No. 3. Morrill had two of the bigger wins this season come in singles as she clinched both matches against MSU Denver giving the Lady Mustangs the 5-4 wins each time. Some other wins include Point Loma, Northwest Missouri State and Tarleton State. In doubles top wins include Arizona Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, East Central and wins in conference against CSU-Pueblo, Colorado Christian and Colorado Mesa.

To qualify for First-Team All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and must have been an active student at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters.

The Lady Mustangs closed the season going 9-15 overall and ended the year with a strong 5-3 win against Colorado Mesa to claim the RMAC Tournament title.
