LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team fell just short against Texas-Permian Basin, 6-3 and then closed the weekend with a 7-0 loss to Division I New Mexico State.
In the first match of the week, WNMU (4-13) opened against the UTPB Falcons (2-10). In doubles, the Lady Mustangs controlled No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Senior

Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) added an 8-2 win at No. 3. Senior
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/redshirt sophomore
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) dropped their match at No. 2, 1-8.
In singles,
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) picked up the only point at No. 3 posting the 6-2, 6-4 straight set win. Heinze at No. 5 and Osuna at No. 2 each went three sets. Heinze dropped the first set, 3-6, then came back with a 6-4 win in the second set before a 3-10 loss in the third. Osuna grabbed the first set, 6-2, but then dropped the next two, 3-6 and 1-6. Goodland took four games at No. 4, 2-6, 2-6, while
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at the top flight and Morrill at No. 6 fell by the same scores of 0-6, 1-6.
To close the weekend on Sunday WNMU faced NMSU (7-7). The Aggies were able to pull away in doubles and then win all six matches in singles to claim the victory. In doubles,
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/Goodland at the top flight came the closest falling, 3-6. Heinze/Morrill fell 1-6 at No. 2. WNMU then had to forfeit the final point at No. 3.
In singles, Heinze won five games at No. 4, 3-6, 2-6. Morrill grabbed four games at No. 5, 3-6, 1-6.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) at the top flight at Goodland at No. 3 fell by the same scores of 0-6, 2-6, while
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) lost at No. 2, 0-6, 0-6. WNMU then had to forfeit the final point at No. 6.
The Lady Mustangs will now prepare to open RMAC play this Friday at MSU Denver. They will also face future Lone Star opponent Tarleton State later on Friday. WNMU closes the trip on Saturday at CSU-Pueblo.
