Nationally-Ranked Cameron Too Much for Mustang Tennis Teams

LAWTON, Okla. – After having a match postponed at Midwestern State on Friday, the Western New Mexico University tennis teams were able to play Saturday against a tough Cameron University squad. The Aggies won in the men's match, 6-3 and then in the women's, 9-0.  

On the men's side, No. 28 WNMU (8-7) did their best against No. 15, but Cameron (9-2) was just too strong in singles play. In doubles play, the Mustangs started strong taking two of three. Junior Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes)/freshman Liam Fraboulet (Lycee Kerraoul, Paimpol, France) posted an 8-2 win at No. 2. Redshirt sophomore Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes)/sophomore Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan) took down the No. 18 doubles pair with the 8-5 win at the top flight. Sophomore Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad)/freshman Blayze O' Keefe pushed it to the limit at No. 3 before falling just short, 6-8.

In singles, Pageault claimed the only win for the Mustangs as he cruised to the 6-3, 6-1 win at the top flight. Fraboulet had a tough match going at No. 4 as he lost in straight sets, but fell just short in each, 4-6, 6-7. Da Lio at No. 2 also went into a tiebreaker in the first before falling in straight sets, 6-7, 2-6. Gnilozubov fell at No. 3, 0-6, 3-6, O' Keefe won three games also at No. 6, 1-6, 2-6 and Santibanez fell 0-6, 2-6 at No. 5.

On the women's side, No. 20 Cameron (7-1) overpowered the Lady Mustangs (4-9). In doubles, senior Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad)/junior Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey) came the closest winning four games at No. 3, 4-8. Senior Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/redshirt sophomore Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) grabbed three games at No. 2, 3-8. Senior Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/junior Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) fell at the top flight, 1-8.

In singles, Osuna won the most games posting five at No. 2, 3-6, 2-6. Goodland and Heinze each won four games in their matches with Goodland falling at No. 4, 2-6, 2-6 and Heinze at No. 5, 3-6, 1-6. Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) lost at the top flight to the No. 25 ranked player in the nation in Paula Gutierrez, 1-6, 1-6. Morrill fell at No. 6, 2-6, 0-6 and Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) dropped her match at No. 3, 0-6, 1-6.

Both teams will play a pair of matches Sunday against Northwest Missouri State and East Central.
