LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's tennis team stayed with New Mexico State University throughout most of the day before the Aggies came away with the 7-0 victory on Friday afternoon.
In doubles action, WNMU (2-2) grabbed a win at No. 2 behind Junior
Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes)/sophomore
Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad), 7-5. NMSU (2-6) was able to claim 6-3 wins in the other doubles matches to take the one-point doubles win. Redshirt sophomore
Tristan Da Lio (Casablanca/Academie des Hauts de Nimes)/sophomore
Vladimir Gnilozubov (Kazakhstan, Astana/Kazakhstan) played at No. 1, while freshmen
Blayze O'Keefe (Las Vegas, NV)/
Liam Fraboulet (Lycee Kerraoul, Paimpol, France) at No. 3.
In singles action, O'Keefe came the closest at No. 4 pushing his to a third set. He won the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 and after dropping the second, 4-6, then battled in the third which turned into a super tiebreaker , 6-10. Da Lio was close to a set at No. 3 dropping a tight opening set, 5-7 and then fell in the second, 2-6. Fraboulet at No. 5 and Santibanez at No. 6 each played a pair of close opening sets. Both fell, 4-6 in the first set, then Fraboulet lost in the second, 1-6 and Santibanez in his second set, 2-6. Gnilozubov posted six games in his match at No. 2. After a 2-6 loss in the first set, he came back to push the second set before a 4-6 setback. Pageault fell at the top flight, 3-6, 0-6.
WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will play at Division I Northern Arizona Sunday at 1 p.m.
