PUEBLO, Colo. -- After coming through with a pair of tight victories in doubles action, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team cruised in singles play to secure the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament title over Colorado Mesa, 5-2, Saturday. This marks the third RMAC Tournament title in the last four years for the Lady Mustangs. It is also the third straight year in which WNMU and Colorado Mesa have met in the championship of the tournament.
With the win, WNMU receives the automatic bid into the NCAA South Central Regional that will take place May 2-5. The Lady Mustangs will likely be the fourth seed out of the region and would face current top seed St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas. The NCAA will release the official bracket on Tuesday night with their selection show at 6 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
Doubles was close in all three matches.
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/
Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) came away with a close 8-6 win at the top flight.
Pauline Emin (Viry, France/Lycee Arbez Carme)/
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) had the same two-point victory claiming a 9-7 win at No. 3.
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado)/
Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado ) came really close to giving WNMU all three points as they went into a tiebreaker at No. 2 before falling, 8-9 (2-7).
Then in singles action, the Lady Mustangs dominated. Needing just three to clinch, they would get points at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 for the win. Tiurina cruised at the top flight posting a 6-3, 6-2 win. Emin rolled in her first set at No. 5 with a 6-1 win and then came back with a 6-4 second set win. Osuna helped seal the deal at No. 4 as she fought through a tough opening set 7-5 victory, to dominate the second set, 6-0.
WNMU, currently on a seven-match winning streak, are 12-11 overall on the season and will wait for the selection show on Tuesday night to see where they will play.
