VALLEJO, Calif. – Facing a tough field this week at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, the Western New Mexico University men's golf team is in fifth after the first two rounds wrapped up Monday at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Course.
WNMU carded rounds of 303 and 305 to tally a 608, just a stroke back of Dallas Baptist for fourth. CSU-Monterey Bay leads the 20-team tournament with a 584. Dixie State's Kenny You leads on the individual side with a 145, a stroke ahead of the field.
Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) is just two strokes back of the top spot as he led the way for the Mustangs with rounds of 77 and 70. His second round 70 was the best of any Mustang during either round, to finish with a 147 and into a tie for fifth.
Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) had the same start Hill did with a first round 77 before coming back with a strong second round 74 to end with a 151 and into a tie for 21
st.
Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School), Deryk "Buzz" Perales and
Ben Skinner (Hertfordshire, England/Lorretto Academy) are all tied for 58
th with rounds of 157. Wetton posted the best opening round of any Mustang with a 73, but then had a second round 84 to tally his 157. Perales fired the third 77 on the team in the first round and then added an 80 in the second round. Skinner had a strong start with a 76 and then finished the day with an 81.
WNMU will wrap up the third and final round Tuesday morning.
