COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western New Mexico University tennis players
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) and
Pablo Santibanez (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico/CETYS Universidad) were named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Players of the Week as announced by the conference office Thursday.
Tiurina had a dominating week in singles going a perfect 4-0 at the top flight which included wins against Division I Western Michigan and #33 St. Edward's. She opened her week with an impressive win against Western Michigan as she won the first set, 7-5 and then came back from a 1-6 second set loss to win in a third set tiebreaker, 10-8. Against nationally-ranked St. Edward's, she rolled to a 6-0 first set win then fought off a near comeback in the second set winning in a tiebreaker, 7-6. She added a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win against Texas-Permian Basin and then a 6-1, 6-2 win against Tarleton State. Tiurina added two doubles wins with
Annica Betz (Celle, Germany/Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria Gymnasium) against Texas-Permian Basin and Tarleton State.
Santibanez went a perfect 3-0 in doubles with teammate
Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain) and also held a 2-0 singles record in helping WNMU to a 3-0 week. In the big win over #22 St. Edward's, Santibanez claimed a doubles win and then added a 6-3, 6-4 singles victory at No. 6. Against Texas-Permian Basin it was once again a doubles win and to finish the week against East Texas, he won his third doubles match and then capped the week with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
WNMU is in action this week in California as the men open against Vanguard today while the women open against San Diego Christian on Friday.
