AUSTIN, Tex. – The Western New Mexico University men's golf team remains seventh in the latest Golfstat rankings, while they remain in the top-10 in the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll at nine as they prepare for the Super Regional May 5-7 at the Grey Rock Golf Course in Austin, Tex.
The Mustangs have four event wins to their credit this spring and remain seventh in the Golfstat rankings. WNMU is the only RMAC school ranked. Two schools in the Super Regional are ranked ahead of the Mustangs in Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State. Cal State Monterey Bay is second in the Golfstat poll with four event wins, while Chico State is fourth with three event wins. Other teams ranked in the Region as well as in Golfstat include Cal State Stanislaus (10), St. Edward's (19) and Sonoma State (22).
In the Golf World/Nike Golf Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Poll, the Mustangs sit in ninth. WNMU was eighth in the poll in the previous rankings, as Central Missouri out of the MIAA moved from nine to seven after winning their conference championship. The Mustangs are the third highest team ranked in the Super Regional behind only Cal State Monterey Bay (3) and Chico State (5). Other teams ranked out of the region include Cal State Stanislaus (12), St. Edward's (18) and Sonoma State (23). Four other teams are receiving votes including Colorado Mines, Cameron, Dallas Baptist and Simon Fraser giving the region five teams either receiving votes or ranked in the top-25 out of the South Central and West.
Individually, WNMU has five golfers ranked in the top-150 on Golfstat. Senior
David Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) and sophomore
Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) are ranked 54
th and 55
th, respectively. Just a few spots down freshman
Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School) is ranked 61
st, followed by sophomore
Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) in 62
nd. Freshman
Anthony McGeorge (Holsworth, England/Shebbear HS) is 116
th.
The top six teams out of the 20 team field advance to nationals, while the top two individuals not on the top six teams will also move on. The Mustangs will send a lineup that posted three top-10 finishes at the RMAC Tournament as Metz took top honors, while Hill and Wetton tied for sixth. Neve was right behind tying for 12
th. Sophomore
Ben Skinner (Hertfordshire, England/Lorretto Academy) rounds out the five heading to Texas as he last played in the Mustang Intercollegiate on Apr. 6-7. Live stats will be available for the Super Regional.
