LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University tennis teams faced their last Division I opponent in New Mexico State University on Wednesday. The Aggies came away with 4-0 wins on both the men's and women's matches.
On the men's side, the Mustangs (6-8) played solid in doubles action, nearly claiming a couple of wins. Junior

Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ) were trailing, 5-7, when play was stopped. At No. 2, senior
Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma )/junior
Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) grabbed five games, 5-8, while senior
Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/freshman
Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) fell at the top flight, 2-8. In singles, Almeida was ahead in his opening set, 5-4 and was serving when play ended. Pageault tallied two games at his match, 2-6, 0-1, at No. 2, while Nunez at No. 4 tallied a game in the first set, 1-4. Brechtel at No. 3 and Damasio at No. 5 fell by scores of 0-6, 0-6.
On the women's side, the Lady Mustangs (0-17) were ahead at the top flight doubles match behind juniors
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/
Marie Monier (Saint Etienne, France/St Paul Forez Montbrison), 5-3, when play was stopped. Senior

Marissa Aguirre (Douglas, AZ/Douglas) at No. 3 fell by scores of 0-8. In singles, Tiurina was leading her opening set, 5-4, at the top flight. Monier posted three games at No. 2, 3-6, 0-1. Morrill tallied a pair of games at No. 4, 2-6. Osuna at No. 3 and Irvin at No. 5 lost by the same scores of 0-6, 0-6. Aguirre won a game at No. 6, 0-6, 1-6.
WNMU will now prepare to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this weekend against Colorado Mesa on Friday at 1 p.m., followed by a matchup versus Colorado Christian on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the WNMU Tennis Courts.
The Mavericks are 8-7 on the men's side this season with quality wins over Cameron (5-4), and McMurry (6-3). Metro State defeated Colorado Mesa in the fall, 5-4, and they recently lost to Sonoma State in Denver, 6-3. The Lady Mavericks are 10-8 with solid wins over Dixie State twice (6-3, 7-2). In the fall they defeated three RMAC Schools in Colorado Christian (8-1), CSU-Pueblo (8-1) and Metro State (6-3). Colorado Mesa will face Colorado Christian on Friday morning before playing WNMU in the afternoon.
On Saturday, the Mustangs will face Colorado Christian. On the men's side, the Cougars are 0-10 and are 0-2 in the RMAC having faced both CSU-Pueblo and Metro State, being defeated 9-0 in both. On the women's side, the Cougars are 5-3, 1-1 in the RMAC with a win over Metro State (5-4).
