Men's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight RMAC Tournament Championship

WNMU men's tennis celebrating their 2014 RMAC Tournament victory
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Make it five straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament titles for the Western New Mexico University men's tennis team after coming back from an early doubles deficit to dominate Colorado Mesa University, 5-2, Saturday.

Following a rain delay, the Mavericks jumped out early on WNMU in doubles play. Senior Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/freshman Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) fell at the top spot, 3-8 and at No. 2, senior Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma )/junior Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) nearly came back before a 6-8 setback. Junior Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/freshman Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ) at No. 3 helped the Mustangs salvage a point pulling away with an 8-6 win.

In singles, Almeida cruised past Jordan Lyden for the second time this season, only this time in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1. Pageault avenged a loss from a few weeks ago at No. 2, although it didn't look good early as he lost the first set, 1-6. He came back with a 6-1 second set win and then utilized a break in the third for a 6-4 win. Brechtel and Nunez helped give the Mustangs a sweep at 1-2-3-4 singles. Brechtel held a break in each set for a 6-4, 6-4 win. Nunez fought back just like Pageault after dropping the first set, 1-6, he came back to win the next two sets by that same score, 6-1, 6-1. Damasio was ahead at No. 5 singles, 4-3, while Lopez was trailing 2-4 at No. 6 when the match ended.

With the win, the Mustangs have now gone 10-0 in the conference tournament during their five straight title victories. It also assures WNMU of a spot in the South Central Region Tournament with the automatic bid. The regional begins May 3 on the campus sites of the top two seeds in the region as WNMU was fourth in the latest rankings with the top five making the field.
