Both Tennis Teams Claim Wins, Advance to RMAC Championship Match

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It will be a championship Saturday for both Western New Mexico University tennis teams as each team defeated CSU-Pueblo, 5-3 on the women's side and 5-2 on the men's to advance to the title match against host Colorado Mesa.

On the women's side, WNMU (5-18) fought through a tough doubles set taking a 2-1 lead. Senior Marie Monier (Saint Etienne, France/St Paul Forez Montbrison)/junior Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) grabbed an early 8-4 win at the top flight and then senior Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School)/sophomore Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) battled to come away with a tight 9-7 win at No. 2. Sophomore Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/freshman Marissa Aguirre (Douglas, AZ/Douglas) fell at No. 3, 4-8.

In singles action, Tiurina and Monier posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Tiurina looked to be rolling to a straight set win after a 6-0 opening set, but then had to fight for a 7-6 second set win. Monier had no troubles, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Aguirre helped clinch the win with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6. Osuna was in control at No. 3, 7-5, 4-1 when the match ended. Morrill posted five games at No. 4, 4-6, 1-6, while Irvin fell at No. 5, 1-6, 1-6.

The men (12-8) also faced CSU-Pueblo and used a strong 2-1 start in doubles to propel them to the 5-2 victory. Junior Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/freshman Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ) had no troubles at No. 3 coming away with a dominating 8-2 victory. Senior Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma )/junior Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) pulled away from a close match for an 8-6 win at No. 2. Senior Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/freshman Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) came close at the top flight before falling, 7-9.

In singles, Nunez rolled at No. 4 dropping just a game, 6-0, 6-1. Almeida tallied the fourth point for the Mustangs at the top flight with a 7-5, 6-3 win. Damasio clinched the win behind a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5. Brechtel grabbed four games at No. 3, 1-6, 3-6, while Pageault was behind at No. 2, 4-6, 4-5 and Lopez was even at No. 6, 6-6, when the match ended.

That sets up an all WNMU, Colorado Mesa matchup for the Conference Tournament titles on Saturday. The Mavericks advanced with the women defeating Colorado Christian, 5-0, and then the men outlasted Metro State, 5-4. The women will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the men's at 12 p.m.
