INDIANAPOLIS – Make it three weeks in a row for the Western New Mexico University men's golf team atop the South Central Region rankings.
The Mustangs sit in the top spot for yet another week after the rankings were released Friday by the NCAA Division II Men's Golf Committee.
WNMU last played on April 8 collecting their third win of the spring topping 20 teams at the Mustang Intercollegiate. The spring season has been fruitful for the Mustangs, collecting other victories at Cal Baptist (out of 18 teams) and the Cactus Thaw! (out of eight teams).
During the run, senior David Metz (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) and sophomore Ben Skinner (Hertfordshire, England/Lorretto Academy) each collected RMAC Golfer of the Week honors.
The stretch of victories has also been noticed on the national stage with the Mustangs being ranked seventh by Golfstat and eighth by Golf World/Nike Golf in the latest polls released this week.
St. Edward's is next in the region, followed by Colorado School of Mines, Cameron and Dallas Baptist rounds out the top-five. Three other RMAC schools, Colorado Christian (6th), CSU-Pueblo (9th) and UC-Colorado Springs (10th) are ranked in the top-10.
Tournament champions out of the RMAC and Heartland receive automatic bids into the super region, while the Lone Star Conference members (Cameron, Dallas Baptist, Midwestern State, St. Mary's) must qualify with an at-large bid.
Ten teams and the top four individuals not on advancing teams from the South Central will compete with 10 programs from the West Region May 5-7 in Austin, Tex., at the Grey Rock Country Club.
WNMU returns to action at the RMAC Championships that will take place this coming Monday and Tuesday at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.
