Tennis Drops CSU-Pueblo to Cap Perfect Road Swing

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University tennis teams closed the weekend road trip with another pair of wins as the women claimed a 6-3 victory, while the men picked up a 5-4 win against CSU-Pueblo Saturday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. For the men, they secured their fifth straight RMAC regular season title in the process. The Mustangs have gone an unprecidented 28-0 over the last five years in conference regular season play.

On the women's side, the Lady Mustangs (4-18, 4-1 RMAC) won just one of the doubles matches. At the top flight, junior Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227)/senior Marie Monier (Saint Etienne, France/St Paul Forez Montbrison) rolled to an 8-4 win. CSU-Pueblo (7-10, 2-2 RMAC) came back to win at No. 2 against senior Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School)/sophomore Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad), 4-8, and then at No. 3 against sophomore Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio )/freshman Marissa Aguirre (Douglas, AZ/Douglas), 3-8.

In singles, WNMU responded taking five of the matches all in straight set fashion. At the top flight behind Tiurina and at No. 3 behind Osuna, both dominated with 6-0, 6-1 victories. Monier at No. 2, 6-3, 6-1 and Aguirre at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1, also made quick work of their matches. Morrill had a fight at No. 4, but she powered through with a 6-3, 7-5 win. Irvin at No. 5 fell, 1-6, 0-5, before retiring.

On the men's side, the Mustangs clinched at 5-2 before eventually holding off the ThunderWolves (6-11, 2-2 RMAC), 5-4. In doubles, senior Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/freshman Jean-Laurent Pageault (Perrigny, France/Academi des Hauts de Nimes) posted an 8-4 win at the top flight, while senior Francisco Damasio (Jundiai, Brazil/Centro Educational Sigma )/junior Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) grabbed an 8-5 win at No. 2. At No. 3, junior Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/freshman Sascha Brechtel (Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany/Kurpfalz Gymnasium Mannheim ) fell short, 3-8.

In singles, each team found success, with one match going the distance. At the top flight, Almeida took advantage of a break in each set to claim a 6-4, 6-4 win. Pageault at No. 2 muscled through a first set tiebreaking win, 7-6, to win in straight sets, 6-2. Nunez at No. 4 helped secure the final clinching point with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win. CSU-Pueblo answered back taking the final three. At No. 3, Brechtel went to a tiebreaker in both sets, 6-7, 6-7, Damasio at No. 5 fell, 4-6, 4-6, while Lopez at No. 6 lost by scores of 2-6, 3-6.

With the wins, the Mustangs finish with yet another regular season title on the men's side with a perfect 5-0 conference mark. The women are currently in second, trailing just Colorado Mesa. Both teams will now prepare for the RMAC Tournament that will begin Friday, April 18 in Grand Junction.
