EL PASO, Tex. ā The Western New Mexico University men's golf team saved their best for last firing a 279 to move into a tie for ninth following the final round of the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational that concluded Sunday at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) continued his strong fall tying for ninth.
The Mustangs had rounds of 284 over the first two days before ending with a 279 for an 847 to tie with Texas State for ninth. New Mexico State held on by a stroke to win the 14-team tournament with an 818. Missouri-Kansas City's Antoine Rozner and San Jose State's Cody Blick tied for first with 198's.
Hill was near the top-10 after the second round and then moved into a tie for ninth following a 69 on Sunday. He added a first round 70 and his best round on Saturday with a 67 to card a 206. He had five birdies, with three on the back nine for a three-under.
Anthony McGeorge (Holsworth, England/Shebbear HS) finished just ahead of
Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) in a tie for 37
th, while Neve tied for 39
th. McGeorge had consistent rounds of 72-70-71 for a 213. He collected four birdies and was one-under on the front nine. Neve saved his best for last as after rounds of 75 and 72, he ripped off a 67 which was the best of any Mustang on the day. He would finish with a 214. He had six birdies and was three-under on the front nine.
Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School) came back with a solid 72 after a great first round 67 and middle round 80 to tally a 219 to tie for 57
th. He had four birdies and was one-under on the front nine.
Ben Skinner (Hertfordshire, England/Lorretto Academy) improved each round as after opening with a 79, he had a middle round 75 and then a 74 on Sunday for a 228 to tie for 77
th. He posted two birdies and was one-over on both the front and back nine.
Ross White (Dollar, Scotland/Kinross HS), playing as an individual, finished with a 230 after rounds of 77-71-82 to land in 80
th. He had a pair of birdies and was three-over on the back nine.
This tournament concludes the fall slate for the Mustangs. They will return to action on Feb. 8-9 when WNMU will host the Cactus Thaw! in El Paso, Tex., at the Lone Star Golf Course.
