LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's golf team climbed into a tie for seventh after the third and final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate took place Tuesday afternoon at the University Golf Course.
The Mustangs tallied their second-best round Tuesday with a 285, coupled with a first round 284 and a middle round 292 for an 861 to tie with Abilene Christian and Oral Roberts for seventh. Host New Mexico State continued their hold on the top slot winning the 13-team tournament with an 834, 12-strokes clear of the field. They also had the top individuals in Brett Walker, Luis Medina and former Mustang Pat Beyhan, as they all tied for first with 206's.
Calum Hill (Kinross, Scotland/Kinross HS) and
Anthony McGeorge (Holsworth, England/Shebbear HS) led the way for the Mustangs with a pair of 213's to tie for 16
th. Hill carded rounds of 68-71-74, while McGeorge came on strong after rounds of 71 and 73 for a third round 69 for his 213.
Thomas Neve (Epsom, England/Cams Hill School/Merrist College) was right behind in a tie for 25
th as his final round 70 was his best of the tournament, along with a 72 and 73 for a 215.
Harry Wetton (Bedford, England/The Bedford School) also ended the tournament strong as he opened with rounds of 73 and 75 to finish with a 72 for a 220 to tie for 43
rd.
Ben Skinner (Hertfordshire, England/Lorretto Academy) trimmed a stroke off each round with scores of 76-75-74 for a 225 to tie for 61
st.
The Mustangs had a pair of individuals competing in
Ross White (Dollar, Scotland/Kinross HS) and
Brendan Shannon (Silver City, NM/Silver HS). White landed in a tie for 61
st, as his best round came in the middle with a 72. He also posted scores of 74 and 79 for a 225. Shannon continued to card scores of 76 for each round for a 228 and into a tie for 68
th.
WNMU will conclude the fall slate this coming Friday through Sunday when they will compete in the Prices Give 'Em Five Invitational in El Paso.
