Tarleton State, UTEP Defeat Women's Tennis

EL PASO, Tex. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team finished the week with a pair of tough matches, falling to Tarleton State, 8-1 and Division I University of Texas-El Paso, 7-0.
 
Against Tarleton State, Western New Mexico University (WNMU) won a point in doubles No. 3 with Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) and Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) pulling out an 8-4 victory. Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) and Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) came close at the top flight, dropping an 8-5 decision. In the last doubles match, Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ) and Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School) lost, 8-1. In singles, Newell came the closest at No. 2. After dropping the first set, 6-3, she came back with a 6-4 second set win before dropping the third set, 15-13. Tiurina won four games at No. 1, but lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Osuna was defeated at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, Berberic fell at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0 and Morrill was defeated, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) came close to a first set win at No. 6 before a 6-4 setback and later 6-1 loss in the second set.

The following day on Sunday against UTEP, The Lady Mustangs ran into a tough Division I squad. In doubles, Berberic and Morrill came the closest at No. 2 before an 8-4 loss. Newell and Osuna were defeated at No. 1, 8-2 and Aragon and Irvin were bested at No. 3, 8-1. In singles, Newell and No. 1 and Irvin at No. 6 were defeated, 6-2, 6-0. Morrill at No. 4 and Aragon at No. 5 both dropped opening sets by a score of 6-0 and then rallied to win three games in the second before a 6-3 defeat. Berberic was defeated at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0, while Osuna dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 2.
 
Following the three matches this week, WNMU is now 5-10 on the season. They will host Cameron University this Saturday in their first home match on the new tennis courts with action set to begin at 11 a.m.
