ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team opened the 2013 spring campaign Saturday against the University of New Mexico and the Division I Lobos defeated the Lady Mustangs, 7-0.
In singles,
Ashley Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado) won the most games of anyone as she won seven at No. 2 against Kristin Eggleston. Newell took three games in the first and then four in the second with Eggleston taking the 6-3, 6-4 win.
Claudia Osuna (Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico/Tec Milenio ), in her first match with the Lady Mustangs, took Nikolina Grbac to a tough first set before falling, 6-3 and then 6-1 in the second set at No. 3. At the top flight,
Ganna Tiurina (Kiev, Ukraine/M.M. Gromov #227) took a game from Michaela Bezdickova in the opening set before falling 6-1 and then grabbed a pair of games in the second which led to a 6-2 set win for Bezdickova.
Doris Berberic (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Hutt Valley High School) grabbed two games at No. 4 before falling to Katie Wookey, 6-1, 6-1.
Diamond Morrill (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) at No. 5 and
Davida Aragon (Arenas Valley, NM/Cobre High School) at No. 6 both had the same results falling, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, Morrill and Berberic came the closest to pulling off the victory. They had come back to take a 6-5 lead at No. 2, but the match went unfinished as the other two doubles matches had already concluded. Newell/Tiurina won two games at No. 1 before dropping an 8-2 decision and at No. 3, Osuna and
Dena Irvin (Farmington, NM/Farmington High School) won one game before being defeated, 8-1.
WNMU will now prepare to play Pima Junior College this coming Wednesday in Tucson.
