Men's Tennis Cruises to Third-Straight RMAC Tournament Crown

The men's tennis team celebrating their tournament win Saturday.
DENVER, Colo. – The Western New Mexico University men's tennis team collected both the RMAC regular season title and on Saturday the tournament crown as they shut down Nebraska-Kearney, 5-0, for the second time in as many weeks, with both wins over the Lopers resulting in titles for the Mustangs.

Entering as the top seed in the tournament, WNMU had no problems rolling through their two matches in the tournament winning by a combined mark of 10-1 having bested Metro State Friday. The doubles proved to be the toughest of the day, with each match being separated by just two points. At the top flight, Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden/Filbornaskolan High School)/Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/) dropped the No. 20 ranked doubles team in the nation with a 9-7 win. That score would be the same at the No. 2 match, with Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School)/Jean Benoit Belin (Nimes, France/Emmanuel d'Alzon High School) coming away with the tight two-point win and a 2-0 lead for WNMU. Omar Lopez (Naucalpan, Mexico/)/Roy Ulibarri (Dexter, NM/Dexter High School) made it a clean sweep in doubles with an 8-6 win at No. 3.

In singles, Fuentes and Weich were the first two that finished ending the match. At No. 2, Fuentes pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 win and at No. 3, Weich came away with a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Almeida, ahead 6-3, 6-5 and Belin, ahead 6-2, 5-2 were the next two closest to finishing. Nunez was also in control at No. 6, holidng a 6-4, 3-3 lead.

With the win, the Mustangs, who entered last week as the No. 1 team in the Central Region NCAA rankings will most likely remain there after cruising through the RMAC slate. WNMU will now host one team in the NCAA Regionals that will take place April 29-May 1, with the host team being allowed to set which date they will host the match. Last season, WNMU hosted St. Cloud State.
