Men's Tennis Puts up Tough Fight Against DI UNM

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University men's tennis team battled and fought best they could, but Division I University of New Mexico had too many weapons as they defeated the Mustangs, 7-0, Saturday afternoon.

The doubles competition was close in all three matches, as Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden/Filbornaskolan High School)/Juan Pablo Fuentes (Guadalajara, Mexico/) took three games from Carl Ho/James Hignett before falling 8-3 in the top flight match. At No. 2, Jean-Benoit Belin/Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School) did even better taking four games from Matthew Neeld/Conor Berg before falling 8-4. In the final doubles match, Matthieu Cavizzi/Roy Ullibarri fought hard against Mads Hegelund/Mitch McDaniels but were defeated, 8-3.

UNM would end up taking all six singles matches, but with it being Division One scoring, the final score goes down as 7-0.

At the top flight, Weich took two games from each set against Ho before falling in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Rodrigo Almeida (Arapongas, Brazil/Nene Lourenco High School) ran into a tough match at No. 2 against Berg, as he fell, 6-0, 6-1. Fuentes snagged five games from Samir Iftikhar at No. 3 before Iftikhar took the match, 6-3, 6-2. The match of the day took place at No. 4 between Cavizzi and McDaniels. Cavizzi dropped the first set, 7-5, but then came back to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6. In the third a decisive set, with no tiebreaker, the two battled forever before McDaniels finally edged Cavizzi, 10-8. At No. 5, Belin dropped a tight first set to Hegelund, 6-4, and then took three games in the second set before falling, 6-3. In the sixth and final singles matchup, Alvaro Nunez (Madrid, Spain/) took a total of four games from Hignett in a 6-2, 6-2, win.

WNMU will stay in Albuquerque as they will face RMAC for CSU-Pueblo in a non-conference matchup Sunday morning beginning at 10 a.m.
