The WNMU men's tennis team put a mark in the Division II books with a head-turning performance over the University of Hawaii-Hilo in Phoenix Friday. The Mustangs defeated the Vulcans, 8-1.
"We started off doubles pretty well,” says head coach Erik Burton.
At No. 2 doubles,
Henning Thrien (Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Carl Friedrick Gaus Gymnasium, Hope International University) and
Yair Banuelos (Mexico City, Mexico, Universidal del Valle de Mexico, Riverside Community College) set the tone early with an 8-3 victory.
Emmanuel Mensah (Accra, Ghana, ITF Center Home, Mt. San Jacinto College) and
Johan Weich (Landskrona, Sweden, Filbornaskolan High School, Hope International University) then pulled a strong victory at the No. 1 spot (8-4).
The men in purple shined from top to bottom in singles. “Our team captains, Thrien and Banuelos, really set the tone with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, and we played extremely solid throughout the line up," concludes Burton.
