Western New Mexico's men's golf team completed the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship tied for 11th place with a score of 314 over a rain-soaked Sagamore Club in Sagamore, Indiana. No. 11 Nova Southeastern shot 299 and holds the early lead in the 72-hole championship, which ends Friday. No. 3 Florida Southern is second at 301.
The Mustangs were in the first grouping on the course Tuesday and by the luck of the draw got the worst of the pairings, as the rain continued for most of the morning. WNMU was paired with No. 4 Lynn University and Concord University (WV). Lynn shot 313 while Concord managed 327 and is 19th in the 20-team tournament.
Six of the top-10 teams played in the afternoon waive.
WNMU's
Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland/Bearsden Academy) led the way for the Mustangs with an excellent 75 and is tied for 11th.
Scott Crichton (Dalgety Bay, Scotland/Inverkeithing High School) is tied for 14th place and shot 76. Other scores included Senior
Eric Chavez (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield High School), 81,
Gordon Webb (Malta, MT/Malta High School) 82, and
Joon Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Guildford Park Secondary) 86.
The rain is supposed to clear by Wednesday afternoon and return for Friday's closing round.
