The Western New Mexico men's golf team is tied for fifth place after the first round of the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino. As a team, the purple and gold posted a 291. Chico State leads the pack with a team score of 2-under par 278.
Chico State's Kyle Souza leads the tournament following a 4-under 66 in the opening round.
Chico State sits in front of Cal State Monterey Bay by four strokes and Sonoma State by 10. Barry University, the No. 1 team in the nation, is in fourth after the first round with a team score of 290. WNMU and CSU-Dominguez Hills follow with just one more stroke.
WNMU's
Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland, Bearsden Academy) is currently tied for 13th thanks to a 1-above par 71.
Joon Lee (Seoul, South Korea, Guildford Park Secondary) and
Zach Blair (Roswell, NM, Roswell High School) are both tied at 25th with a 73.
Eric Chavez (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School, New Mexico State University) shot 35 on the front nine and then a 39 on the back to post a 74.
Scott Crichton (Dalgety Bay, Scotland, Inverkeithing High School) rounded out the group with a 75.
The tournament continued on into Monday evening, though it looked doubtful the second round would be completed before nightfall. The teams will wrap up round two and then play round three to finish the tournament tomorrow.
