Western New Mexico's men's golf team is fourth after Monday's opening 36-holes in the CSU-Bakersfield Elco Invitational. The 13-team field just squeezed in their 36 holes as darkness overtook a tricky par 72 Seven Oaks Country Club in Bakersfield, California. The Mustangs shot rounds of 300 and 291 and trail CSU-Stanislaus who blistered the course with rounds of 291 and 277, 8-under par.
WNMU's
Scott Crichton (Dalgety Bay, Scotland, Inverkeithing High School) leads the Mustangs with rounds of 75-70 (+1) and is tied for ninth individually.
Joon Lee (Seoul, South Korea, Guildford Park Secondary) (73-74) is tied for 14th followed by T16
Steven Maxwell (Glasgow, Scotland, Bearsden Academy) (76-72), T29
Eric Chavez (Las Cruces, NM, Mayfield High School) (75-75), and T52nd
Zach Blair (Roswell, NM, Roswell High School) (81-75).
A couple of local teams, CSU-Bakersfield and Bakersfield College, are also in front of Western. Host CSUB held the first round lead at 288 but slipped to 293 in the afternoon round. Bakersfield College had rounds of 298 and 291 to lead WNMU by two shots.
The Mustangs hold a three-shot lead over Northeastern State and are four in front of D2's No. 9 team, Western Washington. Defending Division II Champion Sonoma State is tied for seventh, five shots behind WNMU.
Play concludes Tuesday morning with the final 18 holes.
