Mustangs Sweep Lobos on Senior Day

Game 1:
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western New Mexico (18-23) secured a decisive 9–3 victory over Sul Ross St. (7-31) at The Yard, fueled by a seven-run sixth inning. Western New Mexico's offense totaled 13 hits, including two home runs and two doubles, while its pitching staff allowed just three runs on seven hits.

Western New Mexico faced Sul Ross St. in a game marked by a significant scoring surge in the latter innings. Sul Ross St. initially took the lead in the second inning when Alexandra Ramos singled to left center, allowing Baylie Savage to score, setting the score to 1–0.

In the fifth inning, Sul Ross St. extended its lead with a two-run homer by Elizabeth Clemente. However, the Mustangs responded in the bottom half with Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) hitting a solo home run to center field, followed by Jenna Peters' (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) homer to right center, leveling the game at 3–3.

The sixth inning proved decisive as Western New Mexico exploded with a seven-run rally. Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) singled to short, and Maria Ruelaz (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) followed with a bunt single. Madison George (San Miguel, CA/Templeton High School), pinch hitting, drove in a run with a single. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) then doubled to left field, bringing in two more runs. Markus continued the momentum with an RBI double. Later in the inning, Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) reached on an error, allowing another run to score. Additional runs came from a groundout RBI by Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) and a single by Martinez, bringing the score to 9–3.

The final score was Western New Mexico 9, Sul Ross St. 3.

Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) contributed significantly, hitting three times and scoring twice, including a home run. Markus matched Peters with three hits and also drove in two runs while scoring twice. Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs over 7 innings with three strikeouts. Spencer added to the scoring with two RBIs and one run scored, along with a double.

Western New Mexico has an overall record of 18-23 and is 14-17 in conference play. The Lobos hold an overall record of 7-31, with a 5-26 record in the conference.

Game 2:
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western New Mexico (19-23) secured a decisive 9-3 victory over Sul Ross St. (7-32) at The Yard on Saturday. The home team launched four home runs, contributing significantly to its offensive dominance.

Western New Mexico opened the game strong against Sul Ross St. in the first inning. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) singled to left field, setting up Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School), who hit a two-run homer to deep left field. The Mustangs led 2-0 after the first inning.

In the third inning, Markus continued her impressive performance with another solo home run to left field, extending the lead to 3-0.

The fourth inning saw Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) hit a solo home run to center field. Maria Ruelaz (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) walked, followed by an infield single from Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School). Spencer then singled to center, driving in Ruelaz while Lucero was tagged out at third. The inning ended with the home team leading 5-0.

In the fifth inning, Martinez singled and later scored on a single by Ruelaz, pushing the lead to 6-0.

The sixth inning was pivotal. After a single by Spencer, Aleeya Barwick (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge High School) came in as a pinch runner. Markus singled, and Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) hit a three-run homer to left center. The Lobos responded with three runs in their half, but Western New Mexico maintained a 9-3 lead.

Sul Ross St. was unable to score in the seventh inning, securing a decisive 9-3 victory for the Mustangs.

Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) scored twice and hit a home run, contributing one RBI. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) collected three hits and drove in one run. Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) tallied three runs, three hits, and three RBIs, hitting two home runs. Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) pitched a complete game, striking out seven over 7 innings.

Up next for Western New Mexico, it will host St. Edward's on Friday, April 24, at The Yard in Silver City, New Mexico. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start.
