Mustangs Sweep Hilltoppers in Dominant Fashion

Game 1: 
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western New Mexico (20-23) secured a decisive 9-1 victory over St. Edward's (13-33) on Friday at The Yard. The game was highlighted by Western NM's four home runs, contributing significantly to its offensive output.

Western NM defeated St. Edward's with a final score of 9-1. In the first inning, St. Edward's scored first when Hanna Zachary crossed home on a single to left field by Sloane Hill. Western NM responded quickly. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) reached second base on a fielding error, setting the stage for Abbi Markus (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) to hit a two-run homer, giving the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) doubled and later scored on a single by Spencer, extending the Mustangs' lead to 3-1.

The third inning saw the Mustangs pull away. Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) reached on a fielding error and scored on a two-run home run by Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School). Later in the inning, Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) doubled to center field, scoring Maria Ruelaz (Silver City, NM/Silver High School) and Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School). By the end of the third inning, the Mustangs led 7-1.

Western NM continued its strong performance in the fourth inning. Peters hit a solo home run to center field, followed by another solo home run by Manns. The score was 9-1 after four innings.

The fifth inning was uneventful for both teams, with no further scoring. Western NM's Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) pitched a complete game, allowing only one run on six hits.

Final score: Western NM 9, St. Edward's 1.

Alixe De Anda (San Tan Valley, AZ/Red Mountain High School) pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run over 5 innings, and struck out two batters. Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) contributed significantly by scoring two runs and hitting a home run, collecting one RBI. Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) showcased her power, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs while scoring twice. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) added to the offense with a double and two RBIs, securing a key hit in her only plate appearance.

The Mustangs have a record of 20-23 and 16-17 in the conference. The Hilltoppers have a record of 13-33 and 10-25 in the conference.

Game 2:
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Western New Mexico University defeated St. Edward's University 8–0 on Friday at The Yard, improving its record to 21–23 while holding St. Edward's to just one hit. The victory was highlighted by the Mustangs' two home runs and a strong pitching performance that recorded four strikeouts over five innings.

Western New Mexico secured a decisive victory against St. Edward's with an 8–0 final score. The game began quietly in the first inning with both teams remaining scoreless.

In the second inning, Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) doubled to center field, setting up a scoring opportunity. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) then flied out to right field, allowing Martinez to score on the throw. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) added another run with a single to center field, bringing in Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School). The Mustangs led 2–0 at the end of the second inning.

The third inning saw Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) double to left center, and pinch runner Jadyn Hooten (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) scored on a fielding error by the right fielder. The Mustangs extended their lead to 3–0.

The fourth inning was highlighted by Lucero's homer to left field. Aleeya Barwick (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge High School), pinch running for Spencer, scored on Abbi Markus' (Sun City, AZ/Willow Canyon High School) two-run homer to left center. The Mustangs increased their lead to 6–0.

In the fifth inning, Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School), pinch-hitting, walked and then stole second base. Lucero singled to left field, bringing in Carbajal. Spencer followed with an RBI single, scoring Lucero. The Mustangs solidified their victory with a final score of 8–0.

Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) delivered an impressive performance for the Mustangs, pitching a complete game in their matchup against St. Edward's. Over 5 innings, Tenorio allowed only one hit and no runs, demonstrating control with four strikeouts and just two walks. The senior pitcher threw 77 pitches, 48 of which were strikes, securing her seventh win of the season. Tenorio's effective outing contributed significantly to the Mustangs' defensive effort.

Spencer led the team with four hits and drove in two runs. Lucero scored twice and collected three RBIs, including a home run. Markus added to the offense with a two-run home run and also drew a walk.

The next challenge for the Mustangs is a home game against St. Mary's. The teams will face off on Sunday, April 26 at noon at The Yard in Silver City, New Mexico.
