Game 2:Â
SILVER CITY, N.M. — The WNMU Mustangs faced a tough evening on Friday, falling to Cameron University 17–4 at The Yard. Western New Mexico (13-15) managed to score all four of its runs in the third inning, but Cameron (14-17) unleashed a barrage of 17 hits, including six for extra bases, to secure the victory.
The turning point came in the top of the seventh when Cameron blew the game open with a seven-run explosion. Kyley Cochran's bases-clearing double drove in three runs, and Madysen Boutwell followed with a two-run homer, pushing Cameron's lead to an insurmountable 17–4.
The Mustangs showed promise in the third inning with a spirited four-run rally.
Lauryn Carbajal (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside High School) was hit by a pitch and moved to third on
Antonya Lucero's (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) bunt single.
Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) drove in Carbajal with a single, and
Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) capped the rally with a clutch two-RBI single, bringing home Spencer and
Maria Ruelaz (Silver City, NM/Silver High School). Unfortunately, the offense stalled, and further opportunities were missed.
In the fifth, Western NM threatened again with Spencer drawing a walk and advancing to second. But the chance slipped away when a strikeout and flyout ended the inning. Defensive errors and missed chances at the plate contributed to the defeat as Cameron's late-inning surge proved too much.
Spencer had a standout game with two hits, including a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) added a hit and an RBI, reaching base twice in her four at-bats. Manns delivered in the clutch with a hit and two RBIs, both with two outs. Lucero also reached base twice with a hit and a walk, advancing runners twice during her plate appearances.
Next up, the Mustangs will host Oklahoma Christian at The Yard on Sunday, March 22, with first pitch set for noon.
