Lady Mustangs come up short against Texas Women's

Game 1:
DENTON, Texas — The WNMU Mustangs faced a tough game against Texas Woman's University, falling 10-2 on Sunday at Dianne Baker Field. The Mustangs managed to crack two doubles despite the setback.

The matchup proved challenging as TWU took advantage early. In the first inning, the Pioneers jumped ahead, capitalizing on errors and wild pitches to notch four runs, including an unearned run by Espinoza on a wild pitch. The inning wrapped with TWU leading 4-0.

The Pioneers extended their lead in the second inning with three more runs. Cherry scored on Townsend's double, and Smith's double drove in Lux and Townsend, pushing TWU's lead to 7-0.

TWU kept the momentum, adding three runs in the third inning. Todd scored on Cherry's single, while Townsend's hit and a throwing error brought Cherry home. Lux's double allowed Townsend to cross home, making it a 10-0 game.

WNMU finally broke through in the fifth inning. Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) smashed a double down the left-field line, bringing Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) and pinch runner Jadyn Hooten (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School) home, thanks to a throwing error. The inning ended with TWU leading 10-2.

Final score: TWU 10, WNMU 2.

Morales made her mark with a crucial double, driving in a run during her three at-bats. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) also contributed with a double in her two appearances, reaching base once on a walk. Lucero showcased her defensive skills with four assists from shortstop, while Hooten added to the scoreboard as a pinch runner.

The Mustangs hold a 12-13 record, matching TWU's 12-13, with both teams standing at 8-7 in the LSC.

Game 2:
DENTON, Texas — The Western NM Mustangs (12-14, 8-8 LSC) faced a tough battle against Texas Woman's University (13-13, 10-6 LSC) and came up short with a 7–4 loss at Dianne Baker Field. Despite a spirited two-run rally in the seventh inning, the Mustangs couldn't quite erase TWU's decisive five-run fifth inning.

The game began quietly, with both teams keeping the scoreline clean through the first two innings. In the third, Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) got things rolling for the Mustangs with a single, eventually crossing home plate on a fielding error to give Western NM its first run. TWU, however, quickly answered back, tying the game at 1–1 by the end of the third.

The Mustangs edged ahead in the fifth when Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Jadyn Hooten (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial High School). Hooten advanced on a groundout by Lanessa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School) and then was driven home by a crisp single up the middle from Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School), putting Western NM in the lead. But TWU roared back with a five-run surge in their half of the fifth, fueled by a string of hits and a sacrifice fly, flipping the scoreboard to 6–2.

As the game entered its final inning, the Mustangs were undeterred. Peters and Marleigh Manns (Los Lunas, NM/Los Lunas High School) stepped up with a single and a double, respectively. Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) brought both runners home with a clutch double, tightening the score. However, the Mustangs' rally wasn't enough, and the game wrapped up with a 7–4 victory for TWU.

Manns was a standout, collecting three hits, including a double, and scoring a run. Martinez contributed significantly with two RBIs and a double in her three trips to the plate. Peters chipped in with a run, two hits, and an RBI. Lucero provided solid defense with five assists, alongside her one hit and one run.

Next up, the Mustangs are set to take on Cameron University on Friday, March 20, at 3 p.m. at The Yard in Silver City, New Mexico.
