Silver City, N.M. – Western New Mexico University (WNMU) Athletics is proud to announce the return of Dakota Spillers as the Associate Athletic Director of Communications and Advancement. Spillers, a familiar face in Mustang Country, previously served as WNMU's Assistant Athletics Director for Communications before spending the past three years at Jessup University.
At Jessup, Spillers served as Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations, where he played a pivotal role in the department's growth and success. His leadership touched nearly every facet of the athletic program, including administration, business management, game-day operations, sport oversight, and partnerships. He was a key contributor to Jessup's successful transition to NCAA Division II and instrumental in elevating annual fundraising to over $1 million in FY25, up from $800,000 in FY24. Spillers also helped launch several support clubs, such as 'The 6th Man Club' (Men's Basketball) and 'Dugout Club' (Baseball). Spillers also helped bring Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities to student-athletes at Jessup.
As a Sport Admin, Spillers directly oversaw Men's Soccer, Men's and Women's Golf, and Softball. His strategic oversight and collaborative approach fostered competitive success, strengthened donor engagement, and enhanced the overall student-athlete experience.
Spillers' connection to WNMU runs deep. Before his tenure at Jessup, he made a significant impact as an Assistant Athletics Director of Communications. Starting in 2020, he oversaw communications for all 13 intercollegiate sports, led the redesign of WNMUmustangs.com, launched the WNMU Athletics mobile app, created Mustang Radio to broadcast all home events, and initiated the department's partnership with eTeamSponsor (ETS).
"I am incredibly excited to return to Western New Mexico University and serve in this new capacity," Spillers said. "WNMU and the Silver City community hold a special place in my heart, and I look forward to advancing the Mustang brand, strengthening community connections, and continuing to create meaningful opportunities for our student-athletes."
"Dakota's track record of innovation, relationship-building, and strategic leadership makes him the perfect fit for this role" said Interim Athletic Director, Matt Enriquez. "His passion for Mustang Athletics is unmatched, and we are thrilled to welcome him back to the team."
Spillers and his wife Ariana will welcome their first baby in January 2026. They have two dogs, Tucker and Remington.
