Mustangs Split with the Lobos Once Again

ALPINE, Texas — Western New Mexico softball continued its 2025 season with a road split against Sul Ross State at the Lobo Softball Field on Friday. The Mustangs took game one with a strong 6-2 win before coming up just short in a 9-7 battle in game two.


Game One: Western New Mexico 6, Sul Ross State 2

Labraida Tenorio (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho High School) was locked in for the Mustangs, tossing a complete game. She threw seven innings, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs while striking out two across 95 pitches.

At the plate, the Mustangs pounded out 16 hits. Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School) led the charge, going a perfect 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) added a 2-for-5 day with an RBI, while Madison George (San Miguel, CA/Templeton High School) collected two hits and scored once.

Western New Mexico broke through with a four-run fourth inning, sparked by back-to-back hits from Hannah Martinez (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) and Laryssa Morales (Vail, AZ/Cienega High School). RBI singles from Nichole Armijo (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) and Lucero helped push WNMU in front for good.

Mustang Notable Hitters:

  • Ciara Spencer (Gallup, NM/Gallup High School): 4-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 run

  • Madison George (San Miguel, CA/Templeton High School): 2-for-3, 1 run

Game Two: Sul Ross State 9, Western New Mexico 7

Game two turned into a slugfest, but the Mustangs could not overcome a late rally from Sul Ross.

Haiven Schoolcraft (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad High School) started the game, throwing 3.2 innings before giving way to Kiya Hamar (Forest Ranch, CA/Pleasant Valley High School) and later Alixe De Anda (Queen Creek, AZ/Red Mountain High School), who took the loss in relief.

The Mustangs showed some pop at the plate. Reya Adkins (Benson, AZ/ASU Prep Digital) blasted her first collegiate home run, an inside-the-park shot in the fourth inning that pushed WNMU ahead. Jenna Peters (Lake Elsinore, CA/Temescal Canyon High School) added a solo homer to right field in the seventh to help the Mustangs close the gap.

Nichole Armijo (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain High School) crossed the plate twice, and both Antonya Lucero (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) and Addisen Byers (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva High School) posted two-hit games.

Sul Ross responded with a six-run outburst across the fourth and fifth innings and held off WNMU's comeback efforts late.

The Mustangs will travel over to Odessa, Texas, for the next doubleheader against UT Permian Basin on Sunday, April 27, 2025. First pitches are scheduled at 12 & 2 p.m. MST. It will be the last game for the Mustangs in their 2025 season!
