LA VERENE, Calif. - April 17, 2025 - Western New Mexico University Track & Field continued its 2025 season in La Verne, California, focusing on distance events at the ULV Leopard Invite and Bryan Clay Invitational.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational,
Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) posted a strong performance in the 5000-meter run, finishing 7th overall in her section with a time of 18:12.88, continuing her consistent season. On the men's side,
Aaron Perez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS)competed in the 5000m, clocking a personal best of 15:18.44, good for 90th in a deep and nationally competitive field.
At the ULV Leopard Invite, the Mustangs dominated the men's 10,000-meter run:
- Jarred Baca (Las Vegas/West Las Vegas High School) surged into second place overall, finishing with an impressive 30:49.61, less than three seconds off the winner.
- Javier Garcia (Gilbert, AZ/Gilbert High School) placed 10th at 31:59.50, followed closely by Samuel Ketcham (Goodyear, AZ/Canyon View High School), who ran 32:02.33 for 11th.
- Joshua Lara (Albuquerque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) finished 13th with 32:13.13, and Cameron Shorty (Albuqurque, NM/Atrisco Heritage Academy High School) rounded out the crew in 15th at 32:39.00—all five Mustangs finishing in the top 15 of a large field.
In the women's 10,000-meter run,
Vanessa Dominguez (Pecos, NM/Pecos High School) ran a season best of 39:11.81, placing 16th overall.
Sprinter
Nayeli Cobos (Dexter, NM/Dexter HS) continued her busy season, running both the 100m and 200m. She placed 26th in the 100m with a time of 12.96, and 29th in the 200m at 26.24. Cobos also ran the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay team that placed 10th overall with a time of 4:10.69. The relay included Jeanette Rivera,
Isabella Medina (El Paso, TX/Americas High School), and
Veronika Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Cienega High School).
In the women's 800m, Rivera and Medina ran 2:22.19 and 2:27.86, placing 26th and 42nd, respectively. Garcia also competed in the 400m hurdles, where she placed 12th with a time of 1:11.92.
McKenna Sahd (Angel Fire, NM/Cimarron High School) added to the 5000m depth, placing 22nd with a solid time of 20:03.12.
The Mustangs will travel to Albuquerque, NM, for the Don Kirby Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The meet is scheduled for Friday, April 25, 2025.
