BORREGO SPRINGS, CA – Western New Mexico's Men's Golf Team faced a tough challenge on day one of the Battle in the Desert at Rams Hill Country Club, finishing tied for 5th place with a total score of 290 (+2).
Max Kaesebier (Bad Langensalza, Germany/Pierre-de-Coubertin Gymnasium) was the standout performer for the Mustangs, carding an impressive score of -3 (69). His round was marked by consistent play, with a 34 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine. Jacob Alcorta (Silver City/Silver HS) Jr. also had a solid showing, finishing at -1 with a score of 71. Alcorta maintained a steady rhythm throughout his round, mixing pars and birdies. Oscar Feschuk (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/St. Michael's College School) concluded his round with a score of +1 (73), keeping his score close to par despite encountering some challenges. Tomas Ribeiro (Porto Seguro, BR/Evolução Centro HS) had a more difficult day, finishing at +5 (77). Although he struggled on the back nine, Ribeiro showed resilience and completed his round. Arnav Arkanath (Milton Keynes, GB/Sir Henry Floyd HS) rounded out the team with a score of +7 (79). Despite facing challenges throughout, Arkanath had moments of strong play and capitalized on his opportunities.
Competing as an independent player, Jayden Schmitz (Oro Valley, AZ/Ironwood Ridge HS) finished at -1 with a score of 71. Schmitz's round was highlighted by a strong back nine, where he shot 33, including an eagle on the 18th hole.
The Mustangs will look to improve on their performance during day two, with tee times scheduled for 11:40 p.m. MST.
