WNMU Athletics Delivers 315 Toys to Local Schools in Holiday Toy Drive

Silver City, NM - Western New Mexico University Athletics recently demonstrated its commitment to community engagement through a holiday toy drive benefiting local elementary schools and children on campus. Over the past month, WNMU Athletics invited the Silver City community, along with its student-athletes, coaches, and administrative staff, to participate in an effort to ensure every kindergartner and first grader at several local schools received a gift during the holiday season. The initiative reflected the department's belief that its role extends beyond competition and into meaningful service.

The result of the drive was the collection and delivery of 315 toys to students at Sixth Street Elementary, José Barrios Elementary, Harrison Schmitt Elementary, Stout Elementary, Cliff Schools, and the WNMU Child Development Center. Earlier this week, WNMU Athletics staff, student-athletes, and the university's mascot, Rawhide, personally visited each location to hand out the gifts. The visits brought smiles, excitement, and a festive atmosphere to classrooms as children were surprised with toys and the chance to meet representatives from the university.

"Our student-athletes were excited to be part of something that goes beyond wins and losses," said WNMU Athletic Director Matt Enriquez.  "Moments like these help shape who they are as leaders and reinforce the importance of giving back." This was an opportunity for our department to give back to the community that supports us year-round. The toy drive underscores WNMU Athletics' ongoing commitment to service, leadership, and strengthening its connection with local families. By bringing together the university and the surrounding community, the department aimed to make a lasting, positive impact during the holiday season and beyond.
