Silver City, N.M. – Western New Mexico's women's golf team is spread coast to coast this week as the team is competing in the PGA Works Collegiate and Brooklynn Maes (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial HS), the team's top golfer, is wearing purple and gold at the NCAA West Regional Championship as an individual. The Works is being contested at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida while the West Regional will be held at Brookside Country Club in Stockton, CA. Both Championships are 54-hole events and will be held May 6-8.
Brooklynn Maes (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial HS) had a record-breaking year for the Mustangs, averaging 74.04 in 12 events over her freshman campaign. The Las Cruces native recorded one win and six top-10s over the season that saw her go 716-131, with a low round of 68 (-4). Maes is making the first NCAA regional appearance since 2012 when the Mustangs qualified for the NCAA Championship in Louisville.
The West Regional features 12 teams and six individuals. The top five teams, along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Championship in Orlando May 21-25. DBU, Division II's top team is the heavy favorite along with #5 West Texas A&M.
The Mustangs are making their second appearance at the PGA Works. Last year, the team finished 9th of 12 teams and is looking to improve this time around. The squad will be led by Taysea Powell (Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) and Chelsea Medina (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) who are playing their final collegiate tournaments. Powell posted an excellent 75.92 this season with a win and four top 10s in 12 events, while Medina, who only competed in the Fall recorded two top 10s averaging 75.17. Shandiin Harper (Farmington, NM/Piedra Vista HS), Lexie Klemke and Falyn Lackey (Hobbs, NM/Hobbs HS) will round out the team.
The PGA Works is a national championship event put on by the PGA of America specifically for top minority-serving institutions. This year's renewal will see 17 men's teams and 10 women's teams compete over two courses at TPC Sawgrass, the Valley Course, and the famed Stadium Course where the PGA Tour's Player's Championship is contested each Spring.
