LITCHFIELD PARK, Ari. - The Western New Mexico Women's Golf Team finished up the SMSU Spring Invite on Tuesday afternoon at the Wigwam Red Course. After a hard-fought day two, the Mustangs would lose a scorecard playoff battle to Missouri Western State, giving the Mustangs a T1 finish at (+23), 298-301-599. Missouri Western took home the trophy however by a single shot via their non-counting scores for both days. The Mustangs felt the wrong end of the draw and MWSU got out in the first group of the day due their early flight leaving Phoenix and got near perfect conditions, posing an excellent 294, while the Western ladies got a much breezier afternoon tee time, finishing in the dark.
Brooklynn Maes (Las Cruces, NM/Centennial HS) continued her strong play finishing T-1st at (+3), 72-75-147 with four birdies. After 18 holes, Maes was tied for the lead but lost her scorecard playoff to Cassidy Phelan of Colorado Mesa on day two's scores.
"The ladies really hung in there today with Missouri Western out early and playing so well. We had a seven-shot lead after Monday's round, so I knew it would be tough to hold on with the difference in tee times and weather," said WNMU Coach
Kent Beatty." Sitting around watching teams go out early and shoot numbers is tough to do, particularly in the Spring when the afternoon gets some wind. We didn't get off to a great start, but the ladies got tough on the back nine and made some birdies to get to the clubhouse," It was an excellent effort to get back to the top of the leaderboard. "We're really proud of Brooklynn too, she's a very good player and it's good to see her get the win," Beatty continued.
Taysea Powell (Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) continued her strong play earning a T-4th finish at (+5), 73-76-149. Powell finished with three birdies. T-10th was
Shandiin Harper (Farmington, NM/Piedra Vista HS) at (+8), 76-76-152. Harper recorded three birdies.
Freshman
Falyn Lackey (Hobbs, NM/Hobbs HS) could have very well saved the day with an excellent final round finishing T-13th at (+9), 79-74-153. Lackey had a team-high six birdies, including a beauty on the difficult par-5 eithteenth.
Alexandria Klemke (Goodyear, AZ/Estrella Foothills HS) rounded out the Mustang lineup, finishing T-19th at (+13), 77-80-157. She scored five birdies.
The Mustangs will be back in action on March 17th at CSU Pueblo.
