7/31/2023 3:57:00 PM

SILVER CITY, N.M.- Western New Mexico University Head Golf Coach Kent Beatty has announced the promotion of Harry O'Callaghan from Graduate Assistant (GA) to Assistant Coach. O'Callaghan has served as Beatty's GA for the last two seasons.

"I'm thrilled that the athletic department has named Harry as the first full-time assistant in program history," said Beatty. "Harry was a very good player for us for four years, but he absolutely shined for the past as our graduate assistant for the past two seasons. He's smart, energetic and has a thirst to learn and pass that on to our players. We couldn't have done better in finding an assistant coach."

Coach O'Callaghan would play his collegiate career for the Mustangs, competing in 42 tournaments (117 rounds), contributing to two team wins and multiple advancements the post season. For his career, O'Callaghan would average a solid 74.68 scoring average, ranking 12th all-time in WNMU men's golf history.

"I want to thank Coach Beatty, Athletic Director Scott Noble and our University's President Dr. Shepard for this opportunity. I am delighted to become a full-time college golf coach here at WNMU," said. Assistant Coach Harry O'Callaghan. "After my time here as a student athlete and then graduate assistant, I feel ready for the opportunity to help Coach Beatty manage the men's and women's teams in this new role. This is an exciting time for WNMU golf; within both squads we have a mix of high-quality returning student athletes and some new recruits that coach Beatty and I are excited to work with in. The game of golf has created a lot of opportunities in my life so far, many of which I've enjoyed here at WNMU. I aim to continue coaching the person, the student, and the golfer in that order to help our players be successful individually and as a team on and off the golf course. WNMU golf and Coach Beatty have a history of competing for championships and in the post season; I'll be working to help continue that."

The Mustangs have been active in plenty of tournaments during this summer which will culminate at the Mesilla Valley amateur tournament in Las Cruces August 19-20. Then it will be time to get the ball rolling for the fall… Go Mustangs.
