Gibson Steps Down To Become UAFS Head Coach

SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western New Mexico University Men's Basketball Head Coach Zane Gibson has stepped down after three seasons at the helm for the Mustangs.

Gibson has a (28-36) record in his three years. For the first time in 16 years the Mustangs finished over .500, including their most wins ever in the Lone Star Conference. This season was also highlighted by their first ever season sweeps of Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian. Three Mustangs would manage All LSC honors during is time.

Statement From Scott Noble, Executive Director of Athletics:

"I want to thank Coach Gibson for his efforts here at Western New Mexico University. He, his wife Teal and Hutch will be missed. Zane was able to accomplish something here that has not been done in 16 years. When coaches have success here, they will be noticed. We want the best for Zane and his family. We have come a long way in the last three years thanks to him and we look forward to our next head coach continuing the success we built upon this year. We will begin review of the qualified candidates immediately."

Statement From Head Coach Zane Gibson

"It is a very bitter sweet day for my family and I. We absolutely love the people of Silver City and the people at Western New Mexico University. Dr. Shepard and Scott Noble took a chance in me as a 29-year-old head coach three years ago. A chance not many other were willing to take in our profession and I am forever grateful to them for that. There are not two better people in this industry and I am planning and hoping to be life long friends with them.

To my players, I love you guys. You changed the standard for WNMU basketball by taking a program that has struggled for the better part of 20 years and made it to a program that nobody want to play down the stretch last year. I was just lucky to be a part of some of the incredible things we accomplished. I wish nothing but success for whoever follows in my footsteps here at WNMU. Without a doubt he will have the support he needs to be successful here at WNMU.

This announcement is presented by First American Bank. First American Bank is a proud supporter of WNMU Athletics!
