Tucson, AZ – Friday and Saturday was the Willie Williams Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona at Drachman Stadium where the Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's Track and Field team competed.
The Mustangs had a spectacular performance starting with the javelin throwers. Selma Carrasco (El Paso, TX/Mountain View HS) threw a season best at 26.05m. Along side Carrasco, teammates Britney Hickman, Catherine SanMiguel (San Antonio, TX/Kaiserslautem HS), and Itzel Darkenwald all finished in the top 25 in the javelin throw.
Freshman sprinter Nayeli Cobos (Dexter, NM/Dexter HS) flew across the line on Friday taking 1st in her heat with a time of 26.34sec. Today, she finished in the top 25 for the 100m dash walking away with a time of 12.75sec.
James Hoban started off for the men's events on Friday, crossing the finish line in the 200m with a time of 23.23sec.
The distance team continued to shine for the Mustangs with Gracey Lovato (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) taking 16th in her field, finishing strong with a time of 19:05.51 in the 5000m.
Ending the night, five men's runners broke 16 minutes in the 5000m. The first heat of the 5000m was led by Aaron Perez who came across the line at 14:59. His time improved by 4.0 seconds from last week.
