CANYON, TEXAS - The Western New Mexico University men's and women's track and field teams opened competition at the LSC Track and Field Championships in Canyon, hosted by West Texas A&M University.
The women got the day started in the 1500-meter run, where Jeanette Rivera (El Paso, TX/Young Women's Leadership Academy) earned a spot in Saturday's finals after qualifying through the prelims with a time of 4:56.92 to place 12th overall. Sarah Romero (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland Sue HS) also competed in the event, crossing the line in 5:18.42.
Both the men's and women's teams competed in the 10,000-meter run later in the evening. Aubrey Lozoya (Albuquerque, NM/Cottonwood Classic Preparatory) led the way for the Mustangs on the women's side, placing fourth overall with a time of 38:32.08 to earn five points. McKenna Sahd (Angel Fire, NM/Cimarron HS) added a time of 43:14.39 in the event.
On the men's side, Cameron Shorty finished 10th with a mark of 32:22.76, while Samuel Ketcham followed closely behind in 11th at 32:37.62. Jacob Corral rounded out the Mustang competitors with a time of 34:14.92.
The Mustangs return to action tomorrow for day two of the conference championship meet. Several Mustangs will be competing on Friday consisting of the 3000 Steeplechase with Ameen Ibrahim, and Morgan Haan. Lukas Evans, Derek Schuller and Alexandra Gonzalez (Elephant Butte/Hot Springs High School) will be competing in the Discus.
Shorty and Ketcham will both be competing on Saturday, running in the 5000-meter.
