ABILENE, TX – Western New Mexico University Men's and Women's tennis team started their fall individual season.
"Our women came out and showed all the improvement we've made with our talented new players and our motivated returners," said Head Coach Alex Hunt. "They took care of business against HSU and TWU and then pushed a top LSC team in Dallas Baptist on several courts."
In doubles, Livia Leite (Cunha-SP, Brazil/Bernardino Querido,) and Jenny Larsson (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Coleman and Schaeffer of Hardin-Simmons, 8-2. They were then defeated 8-0 against DBU's Charles-Alfred and Hudson. They went on to defeat Texas Wesleyan 8-5.
Willemiin Van Mierlo and Mann-Ning Li (Converse, TX/John H. Guyer HS) defeated the duo of HSU 8-5 and was later defeated against DBU 8-7(8). They ended the weekend defeating Texas Wesleyan 8-2.
Kajsa Gedlitschka (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley HS) and Caini Wang (New Taipei City, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Nangang Vocational High School) defeated HSU 8-5 and TWU by default. They would fall against DBU 8-3. Lian Timmermans (Nederweert, Netherlands) and Massiel Paredes (Lima, Peru/Pamer HS) would also defeat HSU 8-6 and win by default against TWU. DBU got the best of them, winning 8-0.
In singles, Jenny Larsson (Stockholm, Sweden) had a strong outing, going 2-1, with wins against HSU and TWU (6-2, 6-1).
Andreea Arnuatu, Paredes, and Wang all went 2-1 on the weekend. Arnuatu won in consecutive sets 6-1 against HSU and won by default against TWU. Paredes went three sets against DBU going 3-6, 7-5, 10-6 and won by default against TWU. Wang won 6-3, 6-2 against HSU and won by default against TWU.
"Although the several singles and doubles wins we had over the weekend are exciting to see, we certainly know that we have plenty to work on moving forward," concluded Hunt
The Mustangs will go to Dallas,TX, next weekend playing in the ITA Regional.
