El Paso, Texas – After two long days of continuous golf, the Western New Mexico University Women's Golf team is bringing home a first place award after hosting the 'Cactus Thaw!' at the Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course in El Paso, Texas. The team's final score after the two-day tournament was +48 giving them a grand total of 624.
All six Mustangs placed in the top 15 leader board. Leading the Mustangs, and winning the tournament is senior Valeria Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) scoring a total of 151 (74-77) after the tournament. Enriquez shot +5 today and +2 yesterday, ending with a +7.
Amanda Portillo (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) ended in 3rd being +9 after two days and had earned a score of 153 (77-78) total.
Coming up right behind her is teammate Chelsea Medina (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) who carded 158 (76-82) after the two days giving her +16 in the end.
Mia Trousdale (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) played as an individual in the tournament and ended in T-9th scoring 162 total and an 81 on both days. Taysea Powell (Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) also tied for 9th with the same score card of 162. Both girls ended the tournament +18.
Not far behind is Shadiin Harper in T-13th scoring +23 total with a score card of 167 (82-85) after both days.
WNMU leads in all categorie except birdies, averaging 3.13 in par 3's, 4.56 in par 4's, and 5.25 in par 5's. The Mustangs have 98 pars and 14 birdies. Powell, Trousdale, Portillo, and Medina are all averaging 5.13 on par 5's.
Following WNMU is Fort Lewis who shot a 648 at the end. In 3rd is UT Permian Basin 654 and in 4th is Regis, shooting 668 after both days.
In second place after WNMU's Valeria Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS), was Emma Tornoos of Fort Lewis carding +8 and 151 (74-77) after both days. Third place was held by Amanda Portillo (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) with her +9 score card.
