Pueblo, CO – Due to weather in the forecast, the Western New Mexico University women's golf team was forced to play Sunday, in the El Cheapo Classic, hosted by CSU-Pueblo. With miserable weather conditions all day, the Mustangs pulled out a second-place finish out of 14 teams. Three Mustangs finished in the top-15.
Amanda Portillo (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) had a fantastic day as she finished T-5th. Portillo shot an 80 in the first round but really turned it on, finishing the second round with a 73. Valerie Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Eastwood HS) shot an 83 and finished with 76, placing her T-12th. Lexi Lucero (Ruidoso, NM/Ruidoso HS) had a great day as well, placing her in 14th after carding 79 and 81.
Taysea Powell (Artesia, NM/Artesia HS) was in the top-25, carding an 83 and an 80. Powell finished T-23rd. Chelsea Medina (Silver City, NM/Silver HS) was t-44th, carding an 84 and an 89.
The Mustangs were in second with13 birdies and were second in total pars on the day, with 85.
Colorado Mesa came out on top by 15 strokes, shooting 312 and 308 on the day. WNMU shot 325 and 310, totaling 635. Chadron State's Alpine Hickstein was the individual winner, carding 70-80 for a total of 150 on the classic.
The Mustangs will be in Goodyear, Arizona, for the Palm Valley Classic at the Palm Valley Golf Course April 2nd-3rd.
