Vega Records Five Strikeouts Against Cal U

TUCSON, AZ – The Western New Mexico softball team closed out their preseason Saturday morning, against the Vulcans of California Univ. (PA). A series of hits throughout the first inning gave way to four runs by the Vulcans and the difference in the final 5-1 score. Freshman Kristin Cocke (Safford, AZ/Safford HS) got the start, but veteran Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) closed it out for the Mustangs giving up just one run, while also recording five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Just four batters into their final game of the Cactus Classic, Cal-U used a double to left center to score their first run. After a couple more walks and singles, WNMU made an early pitching change. Aafter forcing the final out, the Mustangs needed to recover in the innings to come.
Miranda Simjian (Humboldt, Arizona/Prescott HS) started things off with a base hit to right field, rounding the bases off a single for Brittany Santellanes (El Paso, TX/Americas HS ) for their first score of the game. A snag by the first baseman got the second out, touching first to tag Santellanes who strayed a little too far from the base for the third out.
Cal U added another run to their total after a homerun from Paige Wilson in the bottom of the second.
After playing steady defense to hold off the Vulcans, the Mustangs needed to rally late to close the gap. With three outs to work with in the seventh, Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS ) squeaked one by the short stop to get on. A double from Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) scored Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) who pinch ran, and gave new life.
A fielder's choice brought Corral around, but would be the final run for WNMU as they fell 5-3.
Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University HS) closed out the game pitching five innings allowing just one run on four hits. She tied her career high with five strikeouts.
