Softball Hold On for 7-6 Win in Game 1; Tally Four Homeruns in Game 2 Slugfest

SILVER CITY, N.M.  – Having already matched their season high in wins at the Cactus Classic two weekends ago, the Western New Mexico softball team made a statement Saturday in their conference opener. With the addition of the Heartland Conference, each team will only meet once throughout the season in for a double-header. In a meeting of the Mustangs, WNMU came out on top sweeping the series, with 7-6, and 16-2 victories.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1:
It took a couple plays for WNMU to dust off the cobwebs, having had the previous weekend off. MSU opened play with a double to left center. Another double after an error allowed two MSU runners to score. A wild pitch crossed one more runner, as the visitors took a quick 3-0 lead.
Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) got her team's half of the inning started with a single to left field. Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) added a single of her own to score Corral a couple spots later.
A quick three outs, brought WNMU back to the batter's box. With two runners on and in scoring position, Corral made it 2-for-2 with a double to bring across the tying runs. Habitzreuther notched her second hit of the day, driving in Corral for the go ahead run.
An throwing error by MSU gave the Mustangs a free base, and a run as Corral rounded the bases to retake the 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, WNMU scored two more runs going up by three with a six more outs to play.
After the ball was tossed around a few times, WNMU grabbed a pair of outs, but not before MSU got two runners across the plate in the top of the 6th. Top of the 7th with runners on second and third, Jalyn McClain (El Centro, CA/Central Union HS ) forced the pop up to get the final out, and the 7-6 win.
Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) and Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) recorded 2 and 3 hits, respectively along with 2 RBIs a piece. Jalyn McClain (El Centro, CA/Central Union HS ) grabbed her fourth win in the circle, striking out three in a complete game.
GAME 2:
Similar to game one, MSU got off to a hot start scoring two quick runs.
A bobble by the first baseman placed Samantha Corral (El Paso, TX/Socorro HS ) on first. Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) then laid out a bunt, forcing the pitcher to over throw sending her to second and Corral in scoring position on third. Corral would score on a passed ball, bringing Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena HS) to the plate. Just barely staying instead the left field poll, Habitzreuther got her first homerun of the season, scoring the leading run. With just one out on the board, WNMU strung together a series of hits to score a total of eight runs in the opening inning, forcing a pitching change midway through.
Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez (Tucson, AZ/Sunnyside HS) added a homerun to her stat line in the bottom of the second. Three batters later, Nikki Medina (El Paso, TX/Montwood HS ) sent a three-run shot over the left field wall, as WNMU increased their lead to 10 just two innings in.
Making it three straight innings, Aliehs Ortiz (Rio Rancho, NM/V. Sue Cleveland HS) led off with a solo homerun over left field, the team's fourth on the day.
Capping off the slugfest, WNMU added three runs and three hits in the fourth for the final 16-2 win.
The sweep marks the best start to conference play for the Mustangs since 2016, and the first 2-0 start since joining the Lone Star Conference. The Mustangs also improve to 5-0 on their home field.
UP NEXT:
