Four Mustangs earn LSC awards Tuesday morning. Daniel Beam,
Michael Anzures, and
Britney Lovato earned All-Conference after last Saturday's LSC Championships in San Angelo, TX. Beam, Anzures, and
Brenda Prieto all made the 2020 Cross Country Academic All-Conference Team.
Running the 8K, Beam finished 6th (25:23.76) and Senior Anzures crossed the line in 8th (25:29.25) securing a top-15 finish at the LSC Championship, earning All-Conference. Lovato ran a 6K, finishing 12th (22:49.82) to secure All-Conference.
"Daniel and Michael ran strong and pushed each other throughout the race earning themselves top 10. Daniel is a tactical racer and he uses his strong finishes to close hard" said Head Coach Macario Campos.
"Britney ran aggressively and full throttle Saturday, running close to her personal best, which is also the school record for 6k that she holds" said Campos.
Throughout his 4 years as a Mustang, Anzures holds a 3.97 GPA and has received many accolades including: 2nd fastest 8k all-time in WNMU history, school record in the 800m run, and a LSC male runner of the week.
"Michael making the top-10 at the LSC championship was such a gratifying moment. As a coach you want your seniors to achieve success their last year and he did just that. Michael set himself up throughout the race to be in contention for the top spots. He exemplifies what it means to be a 'student athlete'" praises Campos.
In just two years Beam was LSC Freshman of the Week, 2019 All-Conference, made the 2020 USA Junior Cross Country National Team and ran in the Pan American Cross Country Cup in Victoria, Canada, the Gold Medal.
In Prieto's two years at WNMU she holds a 4.0 GPA, the freshman cross country 5K record, was a LSC Freshman of the Week, and was a part of the 2019 LSC Highest Cross Country Team GPA.
Campos proudly expresses, "Having 3 of our student athletes make the Academic All-Conference from the available 10 spots says a lot for our runners. I couldn't be prouder of our WNMU Mustang men and women cross country teams. Each member is a critical component of our Mustang Family. They have been committed and have made many sacrifices this season. I want to thank AD Scott Noble and Dr. Shepard for their continued support for our WNMU student-athletes. Go Mustangs!"
Both teams qualified for Nationals Saturday, where the Men finished 4th and the Women in 6th. Nationals will be held at Lubbock Christian University, November 14th.
