Greyhounds Outrun Mustangs

Portales, NM-- Western New Mexico ran up against a hot-shooting opponent Thursday night against in-state rival Eastern New Mexico.


The Greyhounds shot 19-38 (50%) from the field including 4-12 (33.3%) from 3pt in the first half to jump out to an early lead. The Mustangs managed to hang around and a long running 3pt shot at the buzzer by Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) cut the deficit to nine at the half, 48-39.


Eastern would shoot even better during the second half and eventually extended the lead to 20+ points with less than five minutes to play. The Mustangs would make a late run, but the Greyhounds managed to hold them off for the 98-80 victory.


Leston Gordon (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago/Tunapuna Government Secondary) has 16 points to lead the Mustangs attack. Cash added 11 while Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) and Jordan Enriquez (El Paso, TX/Bel Air) each scored 10.


Western will continue Lone Star Conference action next week when they host Midwestern St. and Cameron.
