- Western sprinted to an early 14-0 lead last weekend against the visiting Texas A&M – Kingsville Javelinas who were then looking for a conference win.
- CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) took matters into his owns hands with a 33-yard rush at 13:28 mark early in the game.
- Capping off a 14 play, 91-yard drive DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) drove it in the last 2-yards to put the Mustangs up 14-0.
- Just seconds into the second quarter TAMUK would get on the board.
- On the verge of turning over on downs with 4th and 20 plus yards to go, Fowler found Issac Crichton in the endzone for another WNMU score.
- A 28-yard pass to Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) would get the Mustangs to 30, and what would be the last score of the game.
- A Javelina pick-six gave them the lead, and a fumble on the WNMU half of the field gave way to another TAMUK score and the win.
A LOOK BACK:
- On senior day last year, despite scoring the most points of the season, MSU Texas brought the series record to 4-2 overall.
- Since joining the Lone Star Conference in 2016, MSU Texas has won all three meetings over WNMU.
- Western's two wins date back to the very first meeting pin 1995 in Silver City, which saw WNMU take a 54-24 victory. The following year in Wichita Falls, WNMU proved victorious again, 36-22.
MUSTANGS TO WATCH:
- Junior quarterback CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) continues to rank in the top-10 nationally in passing yards, amassing 2,562-yards with two games left to play.
- Go "Two" Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) sits 14th in Division II, on the receiving end of 10 touchdowns this season. His 886-yards through the air rank 11th nationally.
- Despite sitting out last weekend, Roosevelt Calhoun only drops one spot to second with 58, averaging just under eight a game.
- DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) continues to lead the team in rushing with 93 carries, for 461-yards, averaging 65.86 a game.
- Freshman Josh Powell, claimed his first career kick return touchdown, returning a kickoff for 99-yards against Eastern New Mexico.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
- The Mustangs enter Saturday's contest with a 4-5 record overall, 2-4 in league play.
- Currently riding a two game losing streak, the last time the Mustangs won was back on Oct. 19 in a dominant 70-35 win over Texas A&M Kingsville.
- The Mustangs traveled to the Pacific Northwest the following weekend to faceoff with Western Oregon, falling 37-22.
- Squaring off with their second ranked opponent of the season, the Texans held MSU Texas to just a single score on the way to a 66-7 victory.
- Without their two offensive captains out due to injury, including junior quarterback Zach Purcell, the Mustangs sit seventh in the conference standings averaging 359.9 yards a game, of which 234.0 come through the air.
- Sophomore Triston Williams took over quarterback duties for Purcell, earning conference Player of the Week honors for his performance against TAMUK. Williams finished that contest 13-of-21 for 354-yards and six touchdowns.
- Since taking over, Williams has 935-yards to his name in just four games, along with 11 touchdowns.
- Xavier Land and Tyrique Edwards seem to be the go to for the Mustangs, combining for 27 TDs. Land ranks sixth in the LSC with 4.9 snags a game, and fifth in receiving yards with 74.6.
