SILVER CITY, N.M. - Western New Mexico University Athletics and Head Football Coach
Billy Hickman have announced the addition of Coach Austin Bortle to the Mustang Coaching Staff. Coach Bortle has joined the Mustangs as the Defensive Coordinator. Coach Bortle brings nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience and a strong background in defensive development to Silver City.
In his role as Defensive Coordinator, Bortle will oversee all aspects of the Mustang defense, including defensive scheme implementation, player development, game planning, and recruiting coordination on the defensive side of the ball. Known for his disciplined, high-energy defensive units, Bortle emphasizes accountability, communication, and fundamentals — key components to a competitive and resilient defense.
"We are super fortunate to get a coach like Austin here at WNMU" said Head Coach
Billy Hickman. "Having known Austin for a long time, and having coached against him, I'm excited to see him bring his brand of defense to help shape our group."
Coach Bortle has joined WNMU and brings with him 17 total years of coaching experience, having served multiple collegiate programs across the Midwest and Southwest. He has coached at Lindenwood University (2009 – 2015), Southwest Baptist University (2016-2020), Fontbonne University (2021 – 2024), and, most recently, Eastern New Mexico in 2025. Across these roles, Bortle has contributed to program development, player growth, and competing success in Division II and collegiate levels.
As a former student-athlete, Bortle played wide receiver at Lindenwood University, giving him firsthand experience at the collegiate level that continues to grow and inform his coaching philosophy. He is also a Lindenwood alumnus academically, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration followed by a Master of Arts in Sport Management.
Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, Bortle brings a family-oriented approach to his role within the Mustangs program. He and his wife, Amy, are the parents of two sons, Asher (6) and Anderson (5).
"I am excited to join Western New Mexico University and the football program," Bortle said. "I would like to thank Coach Hickman for allowing me to join the Mustang family, and I look forward to getting my family here to join the local community."Â
