Football Announces Hiring of Deion Melvin as Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western New Mexico University Athletics and Head Football Coach Billy Hickman have announced the hiring of Deion Melvin as the Mustangs' new Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach.

Melvin arrives in Silver City bringing more than 35 years of coaching experience across the collegiate and professional levels, adding a veteran defensive mind and proven leadership presence to the Mustang coaching staff.

"Coach Melvin is an outstanding football coach, and an even better person," said Head Coach Billy Hickman. "His impact on our defense and special teams has already been felt this spring. He is a players' coach, and I'm fired up to see his groups perform this fall."

Melvin's coaching resume includes six seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) coaching linebackers, along with collegiate stops at Western Illinois University, where he served as Co-Defensive Coordinator, and Lindenwood University, where he held the role of Defensive Coordinator.

A former linebacker himself, Melvin's football journey began at East Aurora High School in Aurora, Illinois. He continued his playing career at DuPage Community College, before finishing at Western Illinois University.

"I would like to thank Coach Hickman for this great opportunity to coach at the college level again," Melvin said. "I'm excited to be at a school with a rich tradition and to coach in a great football conference. Coach Hickman has put his trust in myself and the staff to make a difference on and off the field, and I will give him, the university, and our fans my best effort to produce winners on and off the field."

Originally from Aurora, Illinois, Melvin and his wife, Beverly, have two daughters, Lywanna and Sherese. Away from the field, he enjoys fishing and live music.

Known for his passion for the game and commitment to player development, Melvin's addition strengthens a WNMU coaching staff focused on building a championship culture and continued growth on defense and special teams heading into the 2026 season.
