Lovato Breaks School Record at Highlander Invitational

Multiple Season Records Set by Mustang Men and Women

Riverside, CA -- In their last race before hosting the Lone Star Conference Championships in Silver City, the Mustang Men's and Women's Cross Country teams set multiple season bests at the Highlander Invitational at the UCR AG Ops Course in Riverside, California.

Peaking at just the right time is sophomore Britney Lovato (Rio Rancho, NM/Cleveland High School). Lovato posted a time of 22:34.63 to break the school record previously held by 2018 Hall of Famer Nicole Luna (Pueblo of Laguna, NM/Laguna-Acoma High School) by nearly half a second. Luna was a spectator at the event this weekend, and watched as a new leader in the record books was crowned.

Lovato finished 52nd over all for 50 points, followed by Brenda Hernandez (Toluca, Mexico/Oatay) (22:58.42), Brenda Prieto (Las Cruces, NM/Mayfield HS) (23:04.51), Sophia Rodriguez (Tucson, AZ/Marana HS) (24:20.66), and Janai Clayton (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michaels HS) (24:28.41) to round out the top-5. Overall the Mustang women finished 12th out of 23 teams.
Prieto, Hernandez, Rodriguez and Clayton's times were all season bests.

On the Men's side Michael Anzures (Seboyeta, NM/Grants) crossed first for the Mustangs with a time of 25:05.72, 23rd overall, in the Men's 8K for a season best time.

David Apodaca (Rio Rancho/Cleveland High School) followed up with a time of 25:28.61, second for the Mustangs. Crossing third was Daniel Beam (Rio Rancho, NM/Rio Rancho HS) (26:13.83), followed by Dorian Carrasco (Clint, TX/Clint) (26:18.69), Roverto Cota (26:24.90), Erick Arambula (San Elizario, TX/San Elizario HS) (26:26.43), Sebastian Mendoza (Socorro, TX/Socorro HS) (27:10.08) and Gerardo Ocon (Roswell, NM/Roswell) (29:33.27.)

The Mustang men posted a 10th place finish out of a 21 team field.
